“What am I doing here?”
That’s what was going through my head as I stood on the little dock waiting my turn to jump in the water. It didn’t help that it was a summer morning, and I was in a full wetsuit. In fact, this summer morning happened to be my 50th birthday. What a way to celebrate. It hadn’t gotten too hot yet, but in wrist to ankle black rubber I was heating up fast.
I’m getting ahead of myself. I did several things to get myself to this spot. The first is one of those nagging bucket list items. Of course, when I was 20 something and a wee bit more full of myself, I imagined my triathlon would be in Hawaii and called Ironman. But I had to start somewhere.
I realize I’m doing this in a sort of reverse. Since I’ve already finished, you know I made it. I didn’t drown. But I thought if I could write about what I did, and what was and wasn’t successful, it might help someone else take the first step if a triathlon is on their bucket list. And who knows, maybe I’ll get to the next step and do an Olympic or half.
